Rekey or Replace Locks

Price is always a major factor when hiring any business or service for the majority of people. So, in many cases, when a person finds themselves in the dilemma of questioning whether they should rekey or replace their locks, they might opt to go for the cheaper option, which would typically be to rekey the locks. Of course, this is going to depend. There are various reasons for considering replacing and rekeying locks, and here, we are going to go over whether it might be in your best interest to rekey or replace your locks.

First, let’s go over the difference between rekeying and replacing locks, as many don’t even realize that rekeying is a potential option!

Rekeying Locks

When providing this service, a lock and security expert is going to take the time to take out the springs and pins which are in your lock cylinder. Then, this person is going to swap them out with new springs and pins, and these springs and pins are going to be designed to work with a different key. Locks can definitely be rekeyed, but you might want to opt for replacement if the lock is not working in any way, or if you would simply prefer to switch the style you have or type of lock.

Here are some things to ask yourself to determine if rekeying your lock is the best route for you to take…

  • Are you tired of having to use a different key for each of your locks? If this is the case, rather than going through and replacing all locks, you might consider rekeying the locks so that they are all a match for the same key.
  • Did you recently go through a break up? If your partner was living with you, and they are no longer welcome at your home, then you might want to consider having the locks rekeyed. If the locks are not damaged in any way, and you don’t trust your ex to stay away from your property, rekeying the locks is certainly a valid option. Again, this is assuming that there is not any damage to the current locks you have in place.
  • Has there been a change in who owns your property? Or did you just purchase a new property? If you live in a community that was put together by the same builder, then you could have a lock that has been master keyed for construction. Your lock, therefore, could have master pins that were left inside and this enables multiple keys to be able to be used with one lock. Think about how many people had access to a key – contractors, realtors, and so on. Sometimes, you have well over a dozen keys that work with just one lock. Rekeying the locks means having the master pins taken out, so others can no longer access your locks.

You can see that rekeying a lock means a lock and security expert is able to fix certain concerns without replacing the lock completely.

Lock Replacement

Now, let’s go over scenarios that might require lock replacement. There are certainly different situations in which you would want your locks to be replaced rather than rekeyed. Ask yourself…

  • Are the locks worn out? If they are, they might be past the point of repair. This would mean that rekeying is not necessarily a good idea, because it would not be able to fix the functionality of the lock.
  • Are you tired of how your locks look? Maybe they aren’t a good fit for your property when it comes to aesthetics. If you have had the same locks forever, you might want to consider replacing them merely to switch up the overall appearance.
  • Do you need to accommodate a person who has a disability? If this is the case, then there are certain locks that are by and large easier to use than other locks. For example, a lever handle lock is quite popular because of its ease of access. A person would not have to fumble around with a knob lock, for example. You might need the type of lock that can be used without the person having to grip the lock. This is understandable. You might even opt for a smart lock or electronic lock.

As you can see, different scenarios would warrant replacing a lock versus rekeying a lock. If you have any doubt at all, it would be a great idea to get on the phone with a local locksmith in your location. They can help you decide if you should rekey your locks, which is likely going to be more affordable for you, or if you would be better off replacing your locks with ones that might utilize better hardware or have better ratings overall.

What Locksmiths Do

Locksmiths provide assistance to those concerned about the security of their property, whether they realize their locks or damaged, they are locked out, or even that their current security system just isn’t good enough. When it comes to property protection and realizing that you want to keep your family and even colleagues/employees secure, it can be a bit daunting. If you are concerned about automotive, residential or commercial security solutions, you need to connect with a locksmith. Here, we are going to go over what locksmiths do so you can have a better idea of what to expect if you ever decide to hire a lock and security expert to set up security solutions or make repairs at your property. These are things that just about any locksmith should be able to do.

  • Locksmiths assist those who are locked out. If you ever get locked out of your vehicle, your house or even your office/business property, you will understand that it is a stressful situation. But locksmiths make themselves available to get you back inside so you don’t have to be stuck for too long. They offer 24/7 emergency services so you are not stuck in a situation you don’t want to be in. A licensed locksmith will come to you with the tools and equipment to get you back inside – just make sure to hire someone with insurance, too. When someone carries insurance, you don’t have to fret over the idea of them causing property damage. If you are locked out, be sure to turn to a 24/7 emergency locksmith in your location.
  • A locksmith can do a property inspection. They will check your property for security flaws. Anyone could take advantage of this service to learn more about what is available and where they might be lacking with security solutions.
  • A locksmith can install new locks for you that work effectively and they can make sure everything is properly connected. You could want new locks even if your property is brand new, as you don’t know who has access to your property (for example, a contractor). Or maybe your locks show signs of wear and tear. A locksmith can install new locks that you are going to be happy with. If you don’t want to have brand new locks installed, rekeying service is also an option that a locksmith can talk with you about.
  • A locksmith that performs automotive services can program transponder keys. If you lost your transponder key, call a locksmith. Not only are programming transponder keys an option, a locksmith can duplicate transponder keys. There is a lot of convenience offered by a locksmith.
  • A locksmith can provide keyless entry installation. People love this technologically-friendly solution because it is so convenient and allows you to avoid carrying around extra keys. If you frequently have people stay with you, you might want to provide them with a code rather than copy a key for them. If you have a business, the same idea applies.
  • Locksmiths can install safes to protect your items. There are so many different options from safes designed to hold guns to safes that are attached to the floor or wall. There are different materials and price points available. It can get overwhelming so it’s best to contact an expert.
  • A locksmith can offer break in repairs. If your property was broken into, you are going to feel that your privacy was completely invaded and you are going to want to prevent it from happening again. A locksmith can help with this by repairing any damaged components of your security system, and those that can’t be fixed can be replaced. It is better to be safe and take the right steps.
  • Locksmiths can install panic devices for business managers or property owners. Having a panic bar installed can make a world of difference in protecting your employees and customers (you might also see panic bars referred to as crash bars or panic bars/panic devices). They can prevent trampling in an emergency.
  • A locksmith can install garage, patio and window locks for you. These can be vulnerable parts of your property. It is a good idea to have them secured. Someone might easily be able to get in through your sliding glass patio door. You need locks installed! Maybe your apartment window is too easy to open – have a lock installed!
  • A locksmith can install a security camera. Being able to record those coming onto your property can be truly helpful. Think about how many times you have seen videos of people stealing packages off the front porches of their neighbors. If you are having work done on your property, maybe you want eyes on the contractor when you can’t be there. A security camera can help.

The services mentioned offer a look into what locksmiths do. If you have any questions and happen to be in our service area, give us a ring. If you are not in our location, there is surely a locksmith near you that can help you for an affordable price. Most locksmiths will provide consultations and price quotes for free. With any luck you now know better how a locksmith can help you. We are glad that you have taken the time to learn about what locksmiths do. Remember to always make sure they are licensed and insured!

Essentials of Lock Maintenance

Here are some steps to take to care for the maintenance of your locks:

  • Perform a lock inventory – You should walk around your home and go into each room to figure out how many locks you have in each room and where they are located. Don’t forget your garage or any external locks that you might have. Don’t overlook the locks that are also on your windows. If there are any added security features in your home then you should also make note of those. This could be padlocks and door chains. You don’t need to do this every time you get ready to perform lock maintenance unless you have had some remodeling work performed and you now have additional locks. Also, if you have had any locks rekeyed; you’ll also want to make a note of these.
  • Clean Your Locks – Now that you know where all of your locks are located, the next thing to do is to clean them. Even though this can be time consuming, it is very helpful to keep them working efficiently. As you clean them, you are able to double check to be sure that you didn’t miss any of your locks.
  • Test Each Lock – As you work through your list you should also test them. This includes any attached parts, such as handles. They should be secure and sturdy and in good working condition. Make sure there are no loose screws or that the lock isn’t damaged in any way. If you notice that you have a lock that is damaged then you should contact our locksmiths in Atlanta to have them replaced. Check for missing screws to make sure there are none missing. Also, insert the appropriate key for each lock that requires them. If you have any trouble unlocking the lock then you may need to replace the lock. All of them should open without incident. Only use the original keys. Make sure that the lock doesn’t stick or make noise. If it doesn’t then you’ll need to clean and lubricate them. Check again, if the problem persists then have a new lock installed. If you are finding that you have to lift up the lock or push and pull the door or window to get it to open or close, this is a problem. This means that it is time to have the locks replaced. As you go along cleaning the locks and inspecting the functionality of each lock, make note of those that do not work efficiently so that you’ll know the ones to have replaced.

Note that when you go for years without caring for your home locks, grime and dirt start to build up and this has an effect on your locking mechanisms, which causes them to stick. This can also contribute to other problems with your locks and shorten their length of effectiveness. Something as simple as performing routine maintenance on your locks can help prevent these problems from occurring. While it may seem like an inconvenience for you, it will be well worth it to know that your home is as secure as it can be.

  • Keys – If you are performing maintenance on your locks and you notice that the keys are not working in the locks then you should check the locks to figure out why they aren’t working. It could be that they simply need to be cleaned. If you have had a copy made, take back the original key and have another copy made. When duplicate keys are made from other duplicates, they are usually cut incorrectly. Use the original key whenever possible. This will ensure it is cut properly.

Commercial and Business Property Security Enhancements

Are you a business owner looking to ramp up your security? You are not alone and you should always be keeping in mind that security breaches can happen at any time. It is not uncommon for commercial property owners to stress about whether or not they are doing enough to protect their assets, employees, and even their customers. After all, even the most secure businesses can experience break-ins and other security issues. There are, however, several proactive steps you can take as a business owner to prevent your business from being the next target of a break-in. If you are concerned about your business security and wondering what else you can do to make sure you and your assets are protected, follow the suggestions described below. Even the smallest measures can make a big impact!

Upgrade Your Locks

Chances are, you have already upgraded your business locks to electronic ones. If not, you should consider doing so. The presence of electronic locks is usually enough to deter criminals from breaking into your business for several reasons. Electronic locks are nearly impossible break-in to. Most systems with either lock up temporarily or sound an alarm if the wrong code has been entered in one too many times or if the device senses that some sort of tampering is occurring.

Electronic, or access control locks as they are usually referred to, can change the way your business security is conducted entirely. Electronic locks are more secure, safe, and convenient than any other kind of business lock models on the market. Access control locks have been the number one choice for businesses to use to secure their building doors in recent year. Know that you can customize these locks to be as sophisticated or as simple as you may need. Some systems work as stand-alone devices and are great for businesses that only need an access control lock on employee break room and entrance doors.

On the other hand, if you need multiple doors secured and manage a building that needs customization in terms of who can enter certain parts of the building and when, this is also possible with access control. More complex access control systems allow business owners to be extremely detailed about who can have access to certain rooms or parts of their building. This may be necessary for certain hospital wings, buildings that handle highly classified information, or other secure workspaces that need to maintain a high level of confidentiality, even among their employees.

Install Security Cameras

Since you cannot have your eyes on every room in your business at all times and on all of your customers or employees, security or CCTV cameras of some kind are necessary. Even if your business is smaller, you can still benefit from a couple of interior and exterior cameras. Having security footage in the event of a robbery or some other mishap is critical if you want to be reimbursed as a business owner for any losses, but also to protect your business in the event of any other illegal activity that may happen on your property.

Alarms and Other Alert Systems

If you do not already have security cameras and alarms installed in your business, you should make it a priority to do so. Alarm systems are invaluable. They act as deterrents to help eliminate any kind of criminal activity and can also be programmed to alert managers and building owners immediately when there is some kind of security breach or an alarm has been set off by something. Alarm systems of all kinds have become increasingly more affordable, so do not be concerned about breaking your bank if you are planning on installing alarms. Investing in security alarms is necessary and will help protect your business around-the-clock.

Utilize a Commercial Safe

It is recommended that you have a commercial safe of some sort, no matter how large or small your business is. If you handle any kind of cash transactions, deposits, or have large amounts of cash on hand each day, then a commercial safe is a must-have. There are plenty of options when it comes to commercial safes, as well as customization options like mounting and shelf storage arrangements. If you plan on storing little more than cash, you may opt to purchase a drop box, cash box, or other smaller safe. There is no need to purchase a large, bulky safe if you do not need one, but you should consider a commercial safe for cash storage no matter what.

Receive Professional Assistance Today!

Securing your commercial property does not have to be an endeavor you tackle alone. In fact, you should always work with a professional locksmithing expert when it comes to your business security. Since so much is at stake in terms of protecting your employees, customers, and overall business assets, investing in the services of a professional locksmith is well worth it. It is recommended that you schedule a consultation with a locksmith in your area if you want personalized assistance with any kind of decision-making that may need to occur in regard to your security. How the Temperature Affects Your Locks

When your locks are starting to give you problems there may be a lot of reasons why this is the case. You might already know that an attempted break-in can damage your locks and cause problems. However, one of the most surprising reasons why people have trouble with their locks is because of the weather or temperature outdoors. When the weather changes the locks might begin to compress, causing you all sorts of problems.

Here is what might happen during the different times of the year to affect your locks.

Spring/Summer Months (Hot & Warm Temperatures)

Locks becoming jammed are the biggest problem that you might experience during the summer months. The lock may only turn in one way and not turn in the other direction. This is a problem that we generally find with exterior doors. The hotter the temperatures the more the door will start to widen.

When you have this problem, you probably have a deadbolt lock on the same door that is having trouble opening. This can be a problem within itself because the door’s lock will begin to become compromised. If you have a wooden door then you are a more likely to experience this problem than someone with a steel or fiberglass door. Wood is the very material than will begin to contract the fastest and the easiest when the temperatures are higher.

Fall/Winter Months (Cool & Cold Temperatures)

Our locksmiths at Atlanta Magic Locksmith, LLC we have more requests for lock related issues at this time than any other time of the year, during the winter. The lock problems start to happen when the temperatures are below freezing. In this case the door starts to do the very opposite thing than when it is hotter outside, it expands. This doesn’t just create problems with the door but also with the lock.

Your key may not run you are trying to unlock or lock it. You may think that the problem that you are experiencing is due to the key but you are starting to realize that it is actually the lock. To get the lock to work what you might need to do is pull the door toward you to try to re-align the lock with the door frame. This is just a temporary fix and not a solution to the problem. You will eventually need to address the underlying issue because if you don’t the problem will undoubtedly become even worse than it is already. You may not be able to lock or unlock the door at all.

Your Car Door Locks During the Winter

This is the one problem that motorists just can’t stand to happen to them, the car door freezing in the winter. The door may become completely frozen and the moisture that has built up in the lock makes it hard to open the door. The key and your key remote won’t make it budget. We understand that what we are about to suggest may sound strange but trust us, it works. Take a hair dryer and try to heat the lock to see if it doesn’t help you unlock the car door.

If you have a newer model vehicle, we suggest that you start the engine so that you can heat up the car and unfreeze the locks. Now if you aren’t able to open even one of your car doors then this would be impossible to do so using the dryer might be the best option. If none of these things are working for you and you need to get back inside your vehicle, you can always give us a call and one of our locksmiths will be happy to assist you with the problem.

Preventative Measures

If you have never experienced a problem with your locks swelling to the extent that it will not enable you to open your doors then you will never be able to really imagine the level of frustration that this will cause. If you don’t want to risk this problem happening to you then there are some steps that you can take to prevent it. First, make sure that you choose the right locksmith to help if you choose to leave it in the hands of an expert. Look for a reputable and reliable locksmith who will take every service call seriously, including your frozen lock service call. Also, making sure that your locks are properly installed can help you avoid these problems that often occur when the temperature shifts Since we know that many people prefer the look of wooden doors, there tend to be a lot of people who experience these issues with their wooden door.

If this happens to you a lot then it might be in your best interest to have a new door installed. The problems that we mentioned occur less frequently with steel and fiberglass doors. Manufacturers today are starting to make these types of doors more attractive, which means that you can get a door that is just as attractive as the wooden garage door. You have plenty of options for your door.

Lubricating the locks will also help you prevent this problem from happening. This is the case even when the temperatures begin to fluctuate. Using the correct lubricate and making sure that your lock is properly disassembled and lubricated is essential to getting the results that you want and need.

Symptoms of a Faulty Ignition Cylinder

There is a small, but important part of your vehicle known as an ignition cylinder. They may also be referred to as ignition switches. These devices sit just to the right of your vehicle’s steering wheel and the part you can see is the round, key slot where you insert your car key. The rest of the ignition cylinder sits tucked within your car’s paneling and remains out-of-sight. Your ignition cylinder helps hold your key in place while you are driving. It also helps to get the car started once you insert the key into the cylinder’s slot.

Sometimes, ignition cylinders can break, wear down, or stopping functioning as they should. There are several main symptoms that may occur if there is a problem with your ignition cylinder. Know that if you are experiencing any of the problems listed below, it could be that your ignition cylinder is the source of the problem. While some of the symptoms may be indicative of larger issues, it is possible that a quick switch of your cylinder will alleviate any of the issues listed below.

Your Vehicle Will Not Start

Although this particular problem can be caused by other vehicle issues, such as a dead car battery, a faulty ignition cylinder may present itself in this way. It is possible that your vehicle may start at first, but then stall. Not being able to get the vehicle started and ready to drive can be concerning, but even an ignition cylinder that is slightly out of place or damaged can cause this problem.

Although not being able to start your vehicle may also indicate that your car battery is dead, know that this is also a common symptom that vehicle driver’s will experience when their ignition cylinders wear out. Do not worry I this symptom suddenly hits you out of the blue. It is possible that your battery and other parts of your vehicle are just fine. Even though ignition cylinders are small, they are an important part of operating your vehicle. Next time you cannot get your vehicle started for some reason, consider that it may be your vehicle’s ignition cylinder, and not necessarily another vehicle component that is the source of the problem.

How to Prevent Lockouts

It is safe to say that no one enjoys being locked out. Home and vehicle lockouts, in particular, are pretty distressing. This is especially true if you are rushing about your workday or trying to get from one errand to the next. There is nothing worse than coming home after a long day and discovering you are locked out of your home. To avoid these kinds of situations entirely, there are several things that you can do to make sure that lockouts do not put a damper on your day.

Communicate with Your Household

If you live with family members or roommates, communicating is one of the number one thing you can do to make sure no one is left locked out. Lockouts sometimes happen because there is a miscommunication about who is going to be at the house and when. Make sure everyone in your household is on the same page in terms of schedules, when the doors are kept locked, and other necessary information. If you are going to be late getting home from work or experience other sudden schedule changes, be sure to let your family members or roommates know. Inform those that you live with ahead of time where you are going to be and when. This will help give you a heads up if no one will be home when you arrive.

Hide an Extra Key

A lot of families choose to hide a key somewhere around their property to help in the event that someone is locked out. Having a key hidden somewhere on your property can spare you the heartache of not being able to get back into your home when you need to. If you are not comfortable placing a spare key under your mat or under a flower pot, for example, you can buy specially designed lawn ornaments and other inconspicuous decorations that can house a key in secret. A fake rock with a compartment for a key housed in it, for example, can be placed among other rocks, making it blend in. Buying one of these key concealers may be the best option if you plan to keep an extra key on your property for back-up in the event of a lockout.

Atlanta Magic Locksmith, LLC: What to Do, Jammed Safe

Do you have a safe? If so, you know it’s a great security feature. There are so many different kinds of safes available, for instance…
  • Floor Safes.
  • Simple Fire Resistant Safes.
  • Wall Safes.
  • Gun Safes.
  • Burglary Safes Standalone Home Safe.
  • Jewelry Safes
  • Bank Vaults.
Regardless of which type of safe you have, eventually, you might start to have issues with it. For instance, your safe might become jammed. If your safe won’t open, it’s going to certainly irritate you. Your safe, whether it’s used at home or at work, is something that you rely on. You rely on it to protect your documents. You rely on it to keep your most valuable items hidden away. And you count on it to buy you some time in the event of flooding or a fire. You can see the importance of having a safe, but you need to have a plan or at least an idea of what to do if your safe becomes jammed. We are Atlanta Magic Locksmith, LLC. We provide customers in Atlanta, Georgia with the numerous locksmith services they need, when they need them – to include unlocking jammed safes. This is actually quite a common service that customers end up needing. Here are some tips to help you if you end up with a safe that is jammed. Follow these steps and you will be on the road to getting into your safe again as quickly as possible!

First, figure out what is causing the safe to be jammed.
  1. The batteries could be dead or at the end of their life. When the issue points to the batteries being dead, you’re actually lucky because it’s a fast fix. Try changing the batteries, and next time, opt for batteries that are brand name if that is not what you were using this time. Non-brand name batteries don’t tend to last as long as brand name batteries. With dead batteries, you might still notice that the keypad is still lighting up, for the record.
  2. Your safe is in lockout mode. Did you try to open the safe, but entered the wrong code? Maybe someone else plugged in a code that was incorrect. Of course, this is a security feature that is quite important, but it can work against you if you make a mistake. Just wait the time frame suggested before trying again – it might be ten minutes, or maybe twenty – it could be less, depending on the security features of your safe.
  3. The bolt work can get stuck or jammed. What can cause the bolt work to jam? Listen for the motor running, if you are attempting to open the safe but it’s not opening, because that means it’s trying to retract the bolt work. What can you do if the bolt work is jammed? You can gently kick the door safe in an effort to unlock it but avoid hitting the keypad. Gently striking the door safe might do the trick. You will want to pull the handle, but don’t do it in the same direction that you normally would – do it in the opposite direction which will let go of some of the pressure on the bolt.
  4. The wiring can end up becoming worn or damaged over time. Remove the safe’s keypad if you feel confident in doing so, and take a careful look at the wires. You will be able to tell if they have become twisted, tangled or loose at all. If something looks off and you know how to do it, detach the wire and remove the batteries. Then reconnect the wiring. But again, this is something a locksmith can help you with.
  5. The code to open the safe is no longer activated. If there is a different code that you can try, for example, if you run a business and use different codes for different managers, try another one. But it could be that the code has been deactivated.
Of course, there are other reasons for why a safe could become jammed. Regardless of why it is happening (and we are sorry you are dealing with the inconvenience), we hope now you know what to do if your safe does end up jammed. You won’t always need a locksmith to assist you, but if you hire one, hire one who is licensed and insured.

Atlanta Magic Locksmith, LLC: Lock and Key Types

If you have started browsing, then you realize there are an abundance of lock and key types, with each one designed to help customers with property protection. In point of fact, there are so many available to customers that the options can fast become overwhelming – how are you supposed to know where to start? If you are beginning your search and finding that you could use some advice and guidance, then we believe you will find this provided information to be useful. We are Atlanta Magic Locksmith, LLC and we provide services to customers in Atlanta, GA. We can help customers with many lock and key related services, to include maintenance for locks, lock replacement, lock upgrades, and more. We will start with going over some lock and key types, so you can make the right decision if you are shopping around.

We will begin by going over keys. From double sided keys, skeleton keys and transponder keys, to four sided keys, tubular keys and more, there are a lot of different kinds.

Different Key Types

Transponder key: A transponder key has an electronic micro-chip in its head and it’s sometimes called a chip key. You might have this kind of key for your car as it is very popular today. Transponder translates to a combination of the words transmitter and responder. The chip has the ability to absorb energy and then basically dispatch a radio signal to an antenna ring. This type of key makes your vehicle even more convenient to access, hence why it is popular.

Skeleton key: A skeleton key is a master key, if you will. To put it simply, the edge of the key is made in such a way that it has the ability to open many different locks, for instance, a warded lock. Who would find a skeleton key to be beneficial? Actually, a variety of people, such as a maintenance team, janitor, property manager, and so on. Skeleton keys are able to open lever locks and some warded locks. Because they can open many different locks, they are popular and convenient to many.
